I am already a trained school teacher. Will I need to begin with the Basic Accreditation Program?
The Parish Priest determines, on a case to case basis, the appropriate training for school teachers who would like to be catechists. The Director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine is available for Parish Priest consultation should this be sought.
I have been a catechist for 15 years but never bothered to attend formal training courses. Do I have to begin with the Basic Accreditation program?
It is recommended that Catechists in this situation discuss with their Area Faith Education Officer an appropriate starting point. In some cases this may be the Intermediate Catechists Accreditation program. In other cases, there may be sections of the Basic Catechist Accreditation program that are still relevant.
Will programs leading to Archdiocesan awards count if I then decide to study religious education or theology at a tertiary institution (e.g. Catholic Institute of Sydney)?
No. Programs leading to Archdiocesan awards do not count if a catechists then wishes to undertake tertiary studies. This is because such programs are designed to equip catechists with the skills and knowledge necessary to be effective in the classroom. At the same time, though, a number of catechists have found the CCD formation programs invaluable as preparation for later tertiary study.
I completed Unit 2 a few years ago. Will I be able to finish my course?
Yes. Catechists who have completed Unit 2 should enrol in the Advanced Catechist Accreditation Program.
I am interested in participating in these programs but am concerned that I might fail the assignment requirements. Is help available for catechists such as me?
Yes. The presenters for each program are skilled in the principles of adult education. Assignment tasks are structured in such a way that they are achievable for most catechists.
I cannot commit to a six week course but I am interested in the Archdiocesan Catechists Gatherings. Will I be disadvantaged if I choose to go to these gatherings?
No. The Archdiocesan Catechists Gatherings provide opportunities for catechists who are unable to attend lengthy programs to receive some formation for their role. In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to meet with your fellow catechists.
I am interested in the Days of Reflection but might have trouble getting to the venues. What can I do?
Parish Catechist Groups are encouraged to attend these days as a group if possible. It may be possible to get a lift from another catechists in your parish.
